Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April in 1972. Since she was the only child, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In addition to working two jobs part-time, she also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She hoped to become a teacher of English at a secondary school. The dream, however was in vain when she left college after three year of study and became a teachers' aide. Her career began as a spoken-word performer who performed her work live at poetry readings. Then she teamed up to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. Then, during Roots' show, she revealed herself to be an artist. After that, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about performing arts through the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign with Hidden Beach Recordings.
